What’s the deal with Fat Coffee?

Fat Coffee, Butter Coffee, Bulletproof Coffee, Brain Coffee, MCT Coffee: So many recipes!

Why add fat to your coffee?

There is nothing new about Butter Coffee or Butter Tea. For centuries, the rural tribes of Tibet, Afghanistan, India and Mongolia have flourished on a morning brew of tea or coffee mixed with Yak butter. This fatty caffeinated concoction is full of Saturated Fatty Acids (the healthy kinds of fats) that help transport all of the antioxidants and goodness from tea and coffee into your body. Without the fat, you can’t absorb the nutrients!

The tribesmen and women’s physically demanding days are fueled by their high fat breakfast drink that keeps them full, energised, focused, and very importantly, does not deplete their muscle stores!

What do we have in common with an Afghani Tribesman?

Well, if they can thrive on this breakfast drink whilst having such tough lives, we probably can too!

There is much to be learned from a well-formulated breakfast that has been powering people for hundreds of years. Especially in contrast to our very high sugar, high carbohydrate Western diet of low fat milk and sugary cereals that will leave your stomach screaming for food within 1-2 hours of eating! That’s the effect of blood sugar spikes and the resulting insulin release. When you just eat fat, your blood sugar levels out.

Fat coffee will give you energy as well as increase cognitive function that you can literally feel when it kicks in for about six hours–and without the crash. Mixed with even more healthy fats (MCTs from coconut oil), this amped up drink will help produce ketones, which are produced when your body creates energy (ketones) from fat rather than glucose from carbohydrates. MCTs Turn you into a better fat burner

What are MCTs?

The MCTs that are added to fat coffee are Medium Chain Triglycerides that come in the form of MCT Powder, MCT or C8 and C10 Oil. MCTs are digested more quickly than longer chain-fats and are less likely to get stored as fatty tissue on the body. Instead, they are transformed into ketones and used as energy for the body, and if they are not used, they will be released in your urine.

MCTs actually gradually enhance the fat oxidation capacity of the liver and muscle. So, MCTs literally turn you into a better fat burner (ketosis). Drinking fat coffee each morning puts your body in the routine to burn fat all day, helping you trim down overall if you have it instead of breakfast.

Why Butter?

Butter is high in butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid that possesses anti-inflammatory properties. And research shows that it promotes brain function and gut health. Butter also has more vitamins, such as A, D, and K2, than cream and is lower in carbohydrates. The short chain fatty acids in butter and the medium chain fatty acids from coconut oil are what fuel your brain for an incredible cognitive boost–that’s why we feel that we can concentrate so well on butter coffee.

When you consume healthy fats and high quality MCT or C8 oil, the liver converts them into ketones, and the brain loves running on ketones!

Grass fed ghee is an excellent alternative for those with lactose intolerance as the milk proteins have been removed from ghee.

But why grass-fed butter?

The majority of cows are grain or soy fed. It’s cheap, filling and fattening, but cows aren’t designed to eat grains, just like us humans!

Notice the common anti-carb trend? Carbs have only really been mass produced for the last 150 years. So our bodies, as well as animals’ bodies, still haven’t evolved to process grains and an abundance of sugar. This is why so many people struggle with gluten, insulin resistance and inflammation!

When cows eat grains and are pumped with antibiotics, their milk produces the kinds of fats you don’t want in your body. It is vital to keep in mind that fat stores toxins. So if you are eating animal fats, they need to be grass-fed or organic, or you will be ingesting all the crap that they stored in their fat!

Grass-fed cows produce the highest quality and healthiest milk and beef. A butter coffee brimming with healthy fats will flood you with stimulants and concentrated sources of macronutrient energy. The MCTs also have appetite-supressing and energy-burning benefits, you will notice this as soon as you start on the butter coffee!
